Beijing Academy of Science and Technology is a comprehensive scientific research institution directly under Beijing Municipality. There are 31 subordinate departments in the institution, including 19 scientific research institutions, 10 enterprises directly affiliated to it. There are 2,300 employees in the institution, 55.5% of whom have master's degrees or above. The main duties and responsibilities of Beijing Academy of Science and Technology can be divided into four parts as follows: carrying out relevant scientific and technological research, building new scientific and technological think tanks, organizing and conducting scientific communication activities, and enhancing international and regional scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation.

BJAST have formed a "4-2-4" R&D framework : the first 4 means four principal areas including smart city, life and health, ecological environment, analysis and testing; 2 means two distinctive areas including science and technology think tank and science popularization; the last 4 shows our four R&D directions including new materials, biotechnology, information technology and intelligent manufacturing, new energy and low-carbon technology.
